The Aeolian Islands, volcanic in origin, are considered to be amongst the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Thanks to their history and incredible natural beauty, they are absolutely must see magical places.
The departure is from the Port of Tropea (at 14:00h) on a comfortable motorboat towards Stromboli, the only volcano in Europe – and one of the very few around the world – which is in permanent activity. The Stromboli emerges from the sea with its two 920 meter-high peaks. The crater zone is formed by three active cones, and their volcanic activity is predominantly explosive in character, constantly launching off lapilli and magma fragments. The lava flow – which is almost always present – channel into a wide, steep descent valley towards the sea, called Sciara di Fuoco. It is also possible to trek up the crater of Stromboli.
Upon arrival on the island (15:30h), there will be time to visit the picturesque old town of San Vicenzo before sunset. It is also possible to go swimming and then have dinner in one of the islands tipical restaurants.
On the way back to Tropea (departure from Stromboli around 19:30h), back onboard, you will be given the opportunity to watch the volcanic eruptions, as the boat passes in front of the famous Sciara de Fuoco. At night, the intermittent glow of the Stromboli’s explosions can be seen from a great distance. This is why the island has been called the “Lighthouse of the Tyrrhenian Sea” since Classical Ages.
