Called by the Greek poet Pindar ‘Column of Heaven’, Mount Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe and one of the most important volcanos on the earth in terms of productivity and frequency of eruption.
Located on Sicily’s east coast between the two rivers Alcantara and Simeto, the impressive bulk overlooks the whole province of Catania and is visible on clear days from all over Sicily and parts of Calabria. The volcano influences considerably the colors of the crops, the building materials and the color of the ground. Nominated as the UNESCO world heritage site it is a beautiful natural oasis. In winter when its peak is covered by snow, it is also very popular as a winter sport resort.
